WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-47) today released the following statement regarding North Korean leader Kim Jong Il’s decision to pardon and release American journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee. The women were detained for entering North Korea while filming a documentary in China back in March.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On August 1, veterans started receiving college education benefits under the new GI Bill for the 21^st Century (the “Post-9/11 GI Bill”).  An estimated 2.1 million members of the military who have served on active duty since September 11, 2001, including activated reservists and members of the National Guard, will be eligible for up to four years of education benefits, including stipends for housing and books.

 Applauds Secretary for emphasizing the importance of information sharing, interagency coordination 

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-47) issued the following statement on Wednesday regarding Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano’s call for greater public participation in the fight against terrorism. Earlier today, Secretary Napolitano spoke at the Council on Foreign Relations where she emphasized the importance of information sharing between federal security agencies and their state and local partners.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-47) today announced that the Santa Ana Police Department will receive a $6.7 million investment from the U.S. Department of Justice through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  The funding, provided through the DOJ’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program, will be used to add and retain law enforcement officers.

Congresswoman’s bill would raise student achievement through enhanced international education initiatives

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-47) today introduced groundbreaking legislation that will help encourage and expand international education and foreign language programs in our schools.  The U.S. and the World Education Act would require the Deputy Assistant Secretary for International and Foreign Language Education to provide funding for educational programs that promote international enrichment for elementary and secondary school students and their teachers.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-47) today voted to provide crucial support for the dedicated men and women who care for disabled, ill, or injured veterans.  The Caregiver Assistance and Resource Enhancement Act would provide health care, counseling, and respite care services for individuals who provide veterans care, as well as a stipend for eligible caregivers of severely wounded veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.
