February 6, 2009 | CAO Dan Beard briefs members of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on the Green the Capitol Initiative. To his left sits Acting FERC Chairman Jon Wellinghoff who President Barack Obama recently named the head of the agency. Wellinghoff has been a member of the Commission, which oversees wholesale electric transactions, interstate electric transmission and gas transportation in the United States, since 2006. Wellinghoff is an energy law specialist with more than 30 years experience in the field. Before joining FERC, he was in private practice and focused exclusively on client matters related to renewable energy, energy efficiency and distributed generation.

September 15, 2008 | Chief Administrative Officer Dan Beard honored 17 employees at the House Officers Service Recognition ceremony who have worked for the House for 25 to 35 years. The House Clerk and Sergeant at Arms also recognized employees who have achieved the milestone.
July 21, 2008 | Dan Beard met with representatives from the Legislative Yuan, a government group that administers Taiwan’s equivalent of parliament. The representatives came to learn about how the House Recording Studio and the press galleries function, in order to apply some of the principles to their operations. Unlike the House, Taiwans parliament has no centralized feed to broadcast floor action. Instead, Taiwanese reporters setup multiple cameras in the chamber, a practice representatives are looking to move away from in an effort to modernize their system.

The conference focused on business opportunities; finance and investment strategies; legal, tax and regulatory implications; clean tech; implementation factors and business sustainability issues; key international issues; oceans, climate and coasts; and the greening of government and procurement. May 22, 2008 | Dan attended an event held at the University of California San Diego to discuss the Green the Capitol Initiative. The university is in the midst of a similar campaign in an effort to reduce their carbon footprint and energy consumption. Congresswoman Susan Davis (http://www.house.gov/susandavis/) also attended the event. Dan and Davis then met with the Urban Core of San Diego (http://www.urbancorpssd.org/recycling.html), a non-profit group that provides job training for inner-city youth and works on a number of environmental clean-up initiatives. May 20, 2008 | Dan recently joined Wounded Warrior Program Director Patricia Orsini, background, and Congresswoman Hilda Solis, foreground, at a USO care-package stuffing event. The care packages will be sent to deployed soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
May 15, 2008 | Dan met with students from the University of Wyoming’s Institute of Environmental and Natural Resources. The program is made up of the Helga Otto Haub School and the William D. Ruckelshaus Institute. Both are dedicated to understanding and affecting complex environmental and natural resource challenges, bringing balance and information to bear on "ENR" challenges. Dan explained the House’s Green the Capitol Initiative to his guests from the Equality State in a meeting held in his Capitol office.

San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed was also on the panel as well as members of House Administration Committee. Members of the business community including, Adobe, Google and Intel were also a part of the panel. The group agreed that going green just takes buy-in from the leadership of a legislative body or company.

In the command center energy use is monitored and engineers can remotely turn lights on and off at any of their locations in the world. Beard also toured Bloom Energy, Xilinx and Applied Materials.

April 24, 2008 | The city of San Francisco is doing their part to green their city. With 7,000 employees and 6 million square feet of office space the House campus could be compared to a small city. With those similarities in mind CAO Dan Beard met with Jared Blumenfeld, the director of the Department of the Environment for the city and county of San Francisco. Blumenfeld and Beard shared ideas and talked about challenges they face in making their operations more environmentally-friendly.

April 4, 2008 | Dan was the featured speaker at the University of Oregon’s (UO’s) new environmentally friendly White Stag Building.
April 4, 2008 | While on his recent trip to Portland (March 27 – 30), Dan, along with Representative Earl Blumenauer (pictured), met with members of the Oregon Business Association (OBA). Formed in 1999 by some of the city’s most prominent business leaders, the OBA provides “bipartisan, statewide business leadership that ensures Oregon’s long-term economic competitiveness.” The organization is also focused on the environment, continuously examining issues like bio-fuels, energy credits, Oregon’s Pollution Control Tax Credit, “e-waste” legislation, and land use.
Members of OBA’s “Climate Friendly” Transportation Committee were introduced to Dan. The group is looking at carbon filter for transportation investment and mandatory greenhouse gas emission modeling for proposed transportation projects. They are also pursuing state (and possibly) federal investment in “rail.” Additionally they are examining in freight issues, transportation funding and the role that climate change is likely to play in future transportation policy.
April 4, 2008 | On his recent trip to the City of Roses, which was marked by a snap snow storm, Dan met with a delegation from the City of Portland to discuss the Capitol’s new bike sharing program, Wheels4Wellness. The meeting was facilitated by Meeky Blizzard (pictured), who is the Advisor for Livable Communities on the staff of Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), based in his Portland Office.
April 2, 2008 | Dan unveiled the zero-emission electric vehicle with the help of actor Ed Begley Jr. from the television series "Living with Ed" and Congressmen Earl Pomeroy. The vehicle is manufactured by North Dakota based Global Electric Motocars (GEM) and was purchased as part of the "Green the Capitol" initiative.

Born February 13, 1917 in Los Angeles, CA., Litton is a well know conservationist who has been a strong advocate for environmental protection for the last century. He is also a writer, a pilot and a photographer.
April 1, 2008 | Members of the European Parliament spoke with Dan about their efforts to reorganize the Parliament. The members were interested in speaking with Dan to learn more about the organization of the House. The members, including officials representing Germany, Denmark and the United Kingdom, were interested in learning about the people Dan serves, his successes in operating the House, as well as the challenges he has faced running the lower chamber.
April 1, 2008 | CAO Dan Beard testified in front of the Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure to discuss the progress made in implementing Speaker Pelosis Green the Capitol Initiative. The hearing was entitled, A Growing Capitol Complex and Visitor Center: Needs For Transportation, Security, Greening, Energy and Maintenance.
March 29, 2008 | CAO Dan Beard spoke about Green the Capitol at the Better Living Expo in Portland, Oregon. Ten thousand people attended the Expo, at which actor Ed. Begley Jr. from the television show Living with Ed, also spoke. Beard will also travel to Los Angeles and San Francisco in the coming months to discuss the challenges and successes of the effort to make the House a model of sustainability.
March 13, 2008 | CAO Dan Beard testified in front of the Legislative Branch Appropriations Subcommittee to discuss his offices budget request for fiscal year 2009. House Clerk Lorraine Miller and House Sergeant at Arms Bill Livingood also spoke at the hearing.
March 6, 2008 | CAO Dan Beard gave testimony to the subcommittee on the Federal Workforce, Postal Service, and the District of Columbia and the Joint Economic Committee on March 6. The hearing entitled, Investing in the Future of the Federal Workforce: Paid Parental Leave Improves Recruitment and Retention, examined the merits of the Federal Employees Paid Parental Leave Act of 2007. According to the subcommittee, the act provides that all federal employees receive eight weeks of full pay and benefits for leave taken for the birth or adoption of a child.
March 6, 2008 | CAO Dan Beard received the National Bike Leadership award from the National Bike Summit for his efforts to Green the Capitol. The deputy director of Green the Capitol, Perry Plumart, and Allison Rogers, the Green the Capitol Program Manager, are on the left. That same day, Mr. Beard announced the Wheels4Wellness program, which will soon provide bicycles for employees to use on the Capitol campus.
March 6, 2008 | CAO Dan Beard announced the beginning of a new bicycle-sharing program, called Wheels4Wellness, which will make up to 30 bicycles available in self-service racks across the Congressional campus. The program, set to launch by National Bike-to-Work Week in late May, is designed to promote the health of employees and make it easier for them to travel between office buildings.
February 26, 2008 | CAO Dan Beard spoke at a Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming hearing entitled, Food for Thought: Sustainability from Counter to Compost. The Committee looked at how the choices our country makes regarding food and agriculture affect our environment, specifically the carbon footprint of how we grow, raise, transport, package and dispose of food. The hearing examined the approach the House of Representatives is taking to further Speaker Pelosis Greening the Capitol initiative in its cafeterias. With the introduction of a new food service vendor, Restaurant Associates, the House also ushered in fully compostable plates and utensils, as well as more local food choicesall to decrease the impact food service operations have on the environment.
February 25, 2008 | CAO Dan Beard joined House Sergeant at Arms Bill Livingood, representatives from the Clerks office and other CAO employees for the Wounded Warrior Job fair at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia. Patricia Orsini, the director of the Houses Wounded Warrior program, was also on hand to recruit soldiers for the program, which promises to find wounded veterans jobs in the House. The House was among 50 other public and private sector companies that had a booth at the event, which hosted hundreds of soldiers from all over the region.
