Wasserman Schultz and Meek Call for Fairness in Tax Code to Allow Baby Formula Reimbursements for Mothers Who Have Undergone Mastectomies
(July 31, 2009) U.S. Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-20) and Kendrick B. Meek (FL-17) today called for fairness in the tax code by sponsoring legislation – H.R. 3445 – that allows baby formula to be reimbursed under a health flexible spending arrangement if a mother has had a mastectomy and is medically unable to breastfeed. In the past, the IRS has ruled that a woman medically incapable of breastfeeding may not set aside the cost of infant formulas as a pre-tax expense in any circumstance.

MEEK CALLS FOR EXTENSION OF UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS
(July 29, 2009) U.S. Congressman Kendrick B. Meek today called for Congress to extend unemployment benefits by cosponsoring the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2009. The legislation, introduced by Representative Jim McDermott (D-WA) will extend several unemployment compensation programs through the year 2010 that otherwise would have expired this year.

U.S. REP. KENDRICK MEEK ANNOUNCES NEARLY $90 MILLION FOR HIRING OF POLICE OFFICERS ACROSS FLORIDA Legislation Will Create High-Quality Law Enforcement Jobs and Help Communities Fight Crime
(July 28, 2009) U.S. Congressman Kendrick B. Meek today announced a total of $87,873,220 of Department of Justice (DoJ) funding for the hiring and rehiring of police officers among sixty-six counties, cities, and police departments across Florida. The funding will be administered by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) through the federal agency’s COPS Hiring Recovery Program.
